Great vibe at UCAS in Manchester

Fantastic vibe in G-MEX (sorry, we have to call it Manchester Central now!) over the last two days as 20,000 young people hit the hall to meet the institutions and employers exhibiting at the convention.

Check out the MANCHESTER GALLERY

To exhibit is 'to offer or expose to view' but how many esteemed colleagues remember this when they hit the UCAS circuit...  more and more I am delighted to say, but still not enough.

There are still too many tables and chairs with people hiding behind them... still too many people tapping away on mobiles and tablets and way too many people who are not smiling

A smile will always break the barriers down and help to make the young people more likely to approach you.!

UCAS conventions - are you making the most out of them?

4th March 2015

Great to see so many happy, smiley (well mostly) people at the first of the 2015 UCAS Conventions

Check out the gallery and you will see new competitions, different approaches to stand build, a move away from branded uniforms... but unfortunately, far too many people hiding behind tables....

New for 2015 are the UCAS data scanners – unfortunately due a technical issue, UCAS were unable to scan everyone into the event, but those institutions who had purchased a scanner were able to scan the students as they came around (if they could find the piece of paper).  I spoke to one university who were having great success at capturing data using the scanner, but then another near the far end of the room were not having much success, students seemed to have lost their papers by then!  An area to watch as the convention season progresses.

Quite a few institutions made use of the shell schemes as their back-drop this year, attaching panels to the boards creating a great advertising hoarding…. BUT…. Without possibly enough thought on where to put all the boxes of prospectuses they would need, let alone their coats and bags – logistics need to take into account the whole experience for the team attending – not just the creative look.

TABLES…. Aaarghhh my pet hate, were still far too much in abundance – now don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a table, but in its rightful place, at the very back or side of the stand, and used as a display stand and a hideaway for prospectus boxes…. NOT at the front of the stand with people stood, or even worse, SAT behind it.

You can’t exhibit and hide behind…  create a stage and act on it.

I am not eating ever again...
I can't face going through 10 days of that again...
Although... It's the quickest diet on the market... And you don't even need to sign up... Just take out shares in Boots The Chemist!

On checking in at the Renaissance Manchester City Centre Hotel and all their systems are down... They are handling all the customers by hand just like in the good old days...

And... Look at the fabulously written sign :-)

It's so easy just to put up a sign saying your systems are down. But this gives a really nice warm feeling to everyone reading it as well as keeping to the Renaissance brand values.

Well done.

Social media pitfalls - how to avoid them when you're job hunting

15/3/2013

Social Media - The holes 'Young People' get themselves into when job-hunting.

Top Tips for avoiding trouble with your social channels when looking for a new  job!

1.  Check  your privacy settings – keep your
private life private.

2. Ensure you HAVE a social media presence  – not  having one will hinder you when employers are looking – they may  question  why you haven’t got one? Are you not very social? Have no friends?  Have  been barred from facebook?
As you get older build a professional profile  on
Linked-In.

3. Monitor your channels – remember that not only what you post can appear –you can be tagged by friends.

4. Use social media to your advantage – it can help you get a job.
Connect with recruiters, companies and industries you would like to work with.

5. Always think…  would my mum or gran approve of what I’m posting. If not… don’t post it

Being mindful of your online and offline actions is critical when using social  media effectively, but not having a presence can harm your prospects.
According to research 91% of recruiters check social media profiles during  the recruitment process.
